Houseboat, kettuvallam, or shikara? Choosing the right ride and where to actually go for a quieter experience.

"Backwaters" gets used as one word for a lot of different experiences, and picking the wrong one is the most common first-timer mistake.

Houseboat vs. shikara vs. canoe

A houseboat (kettuvallam) is an overnight experience — you sleep on board, meals are cooked for you, and it's slow, scenic, and best for couples or families wanting a relaxed day. A shikara is a smaller day-boat, better for a half-day trip into narrower canals a houseboat can't reach. A canoe with a local paddler gets you into the actual village canals — no engine noise, and you'll pass right by homes, small temples, and toddy shops.

If you only have one day, skip the houseboat and do a canoe route instead — it's the version locals actually use to get around.

Where to actually go

Alleppey town's main jetty is the default, but the quieter routes run through Kumarakom and the smaller villages around Kainakary. Ask your boat operator to route away from the main houseboat traffic lanes — the difference in noise and crowding is significant.

Booking & timing tips

  • Book directly with a local operator rather than a resale platform — prices drop 20–30%
  • Weekday mornings are quietest; weekends see houseboat traffic jams on the main canals
  • Carry cash — many smaller canal-side stops don't take cards
